It was an experiment, I was trying out Amy Tan's style of writing. It was also a strategy as I found that Caucasians find the concept of orientalism very fascinating.
A 16 year-old girl from an aristocratic family during the Qing dynasty had a glimpse of her betrothed. She started to fantasise about life after marriage to this man, 5 years her senior and a member of the royal family. Then she started thinking of the ugly side of this arranged marriage.
What kind of person is he? How would it be to live a life of guaranteed luxury? Will he treat her like how a learned gentlemen treats his wife? Does he want mistresses or concubines? How painful is the deflowering process? Will she be able to conceive and give him a son? What will befall her if she couldn't?
Her unanswered questions only heard by the stars.
The marriage took place and the deed done. She sat by the window after her husband was sound asleep and saw the same night scene before her, perhaps the same shining stars. For all she knew, she was a different person. Yet somehow, deep inside, she knew she was still herself.
That's exactly how I feel now.
